The Best Hunting Apparel and Footwear for Unpredictable Weather

September upland and deer archery hunters are no stranger to summer-like conditions, while those who hunt into mid-season can expect a broader mix of weather. At the other end of the hunting season, spring turkey and light goose hunters may face a combination of blizzard conditions, rain showers, and balmy temperatures as winter gives way in fits and starts. The best hunting apparel and footwear for these temperamental times of year should breathe well, layer easily, regulate body heat, and resist wind and water.
For our fall 2026 update, we tested more than 40 pieces of hunting apparel and footwear at the bookends of the hunting season, when temperatures can swing from 90 degrees one day to downright cold the next. Four new pieces—a poncho, a lightweight jacket, liner gloves, and socks—joined this tried and tested list of hunting gear that continues to surpass expectations.
