Sunday, October 23, 2022, marks the 28th “Sports Equinox” since 1971.  What is a Sports Equinox, and didn’t I just hear about this?  

Well, yes you did because the 27th Sports  Equinox happened just two days prior on Friday, October 20, 2022.

These days occur when the four major professional men’s leagues have games on the same day, an odd rarity, much like a solar equinox.  So on Sunday, October 23, 2022, the NFL, NBA, NHL, and MLB all play games, for the 28th time in the past 50 years!

In addition to the four majors, Pro golf and soccer also meet up today.

The Sports Equinox is a new pop culture marker, so let’s take a moment to understand what it’s all about.  

As of the fall of 1971, due to an overlap of post-season and earlier pre-seasons, the major four men’s leagues played on the same day for the first time in recorded history.

On Friday, October 20, 2022, the 27th Sports Equinox occurred, and fans across the globe paid their respects.  What a treat to bookend a great weekend of competition with two notable days! 

 Even better is that the modern definition of this high-holiday has expanded to include the next closest stratosphere, golf. soccer, and sometimes, some of those other sports.
