When you think of Nebraska, you picture bison, the Great Plains, and sandhill cranes. What you’re probably not picturing is a place that looks straight out of a sci-fi movie. When planning my visit to Toadstool Geologic Park, I didn’t know what to expect. After spending a day exploring this geological Disneyland, I’ll be recommending it to every traveler looking for something unexpected and unforgettable.

From the second you step onto the grounds, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to the moon. There’s truly no other word for the environment than “otherworldly.” Apart from a few other visitors and the grazing cows that greet you at the entrance, you’ll mostly have the park to yourself.

Named after the mushroom-like rock formations that dot the landscape, Toadstool is made up of sandstone hills that crop up from the Oglala National Grasslands, seemingly out of nowhere. These unusual formations are a result of eons of erosion, and you can find fossils here that date back as far as 30 million years.

Today, you can follow in the footsteps of the ancient animals that left their mark on this region. Two main hiking trails allow you to explore the park. The Toadstool Geologic Park Trail is an easy mile-long loop that gives you a taste of the scenery without having to commit to a longer hike. If you have more time, try the Bison Loop Trail—a five-mile loop that meanders around the entire park, offering the best variety of views and terrain.

And if you’ve ever wanted to simulate camping on the moon, you’re in luck. There’s an excellent campground right at the entrance to the park that has picnic tables, fire rings, upright grills, and vault toilets—just note that there are no showers or potable water, so plan and pack accordingly.

The best part? This is just one of the natural wonders in Nebraska that will surprise you and inspire you to get out there and explore the unexpected magic of the Cornhusker State.
