Experience One of the World’s Best Rafting Trips
In the rafting world, fall is typically downtime, a season when rivers that once churned with spring runoff flow at a lazier pace. But in West Virginia, whitewater runs like clockwork, ushering in a wet, wild, and joyous tradition known as Gauley Season. For seven straight weekends from Labor Day to mid-October, dam releases from Summersville Lake make the Gauley River one of the best rafting destinations on the planet.
Rafting the Upper and Lower Gauley
The Gauley races through 25 miles of Appalachian mountain terrain, dropping more than 668 feet between its two sections—the Upper and Lower Gauley. The Upper Gauley offers endless thrills, with nearly nonstop rapids, ranging from Class III–V. This includes the “Big Five,” a group of Class V rapids that culminate in the legendary Sweet’s Falls, a 14-foot waterfall that marks the end of the Upper Gauley’s wildest stretch. It’s such a raucous finale that spectators often picnic on the riverbank and watch the show.
Down on the scenic Lower Gauley, there’s a bit more balance between awe and adrenaline. The whitewater still roars, but with gentler currents and more breaks in between the Class III–V rapids, you can take a moment to soak in the rolling mountains and dramatic canyons around you.
There are plenty of trusted outfitters, like ACE Adventure Resort and Adventures on the Gorge, to help you make the trip downriver, whether you take on the Upper Gauley or Lower Gauley, or whether you choose to do both in the same weekend (or even the same day). The Upper Gauley has a 15+ minimum age limit, while the Lower Gauley’s is 12+. Families with younger kids can explore the upper section of the nearby New River, home to mellow currents and lots of other outdoor adventures.
Exploring New River Gorge National Park
New River Gorge National Park and Preserve might be one of the country’s newest parks, but the New is one of the oldest rivers in the world. The untamed waters of this ancient river have been carving through the Appalachian Mountains for millions of years, and trips on its Class III-IV rapids are a great way to warm up for the Gauley.
You can also plan your visit around Bridge Day. On the third Saturday in October, pedestrians are allowed to walk the iconic New River Gorge Bridge while hundreds of BASE jumpers, rappellers, and high-line riders put on a show. It’s a fitting end to Gauley season—a mix of heart-pounding thrills and awe-inspiring views.
